Sanremo
The statue of Mike Bongiorno, the king of quiz shows and one of the fathers of Italian television, was inaugurated in February 2013 on the occasion of Sanremo Festival, with Pippo Baudo as testimonial. In his essay Fenomenologia di Mike Bongiorno, Umberto Eco traced the deep roots of the success of this character in his "absolute mediocrity", thanks to which «the viewer sees his own limits glorified and officially honored with national authority».
Avenza, Carrara
A reinforced concrete arch to protect the road at the point where a funicular transported materials from the quarry above, at the foot of the Apuan Alps, to a cement plant. This is the landmark that remains of a huge activity being dismantled. The funicular has been demolished, the quarry has been inactive for years, the cement plant is in demolition phase. Italcementi, owner of the plant and the main cement producer in Italy since the last century, controls plants located in 19 countries.
Pietrasanta
The landscape of upper Versilia is strewn from a myriad of cranes and bridge cranes for the movement of blocks and slabs of marble and granite extracted from the quarries of Carrara and the Apuan Alps in general. The economic activities related to this geological resource have been a driving force for the development of the entire area: from quarry extraction to industrial, artisanal and artistic processing, to world-wide trade. Connected to this activity, many unresolved issues: environmental problems about consumption and pollution (furthermore, quarries are in the natural reserve of Alpi Apuane); economic conflicts related to ownership and management of extractive activities; issues about employment and safety in the quarries and processing plants; possible risks for public health, as health services are researching on the incidence of cancer in relation to the handling and processing of marble (and powders) in this area.
Viareggio
A railway accident took place behind this wall on June 29th 2009, close to Viareggio train station and the city center. A convoy of 14 tank wagons containing LPG derailed following the collapse of a bearing axis. A violent fire hit the station and some densely populated surrounding areas. Thiry-tree persons died. Most of the railway routes of this type of trains pass through urban centers in Italy. On 31 January 2017 the court of Lucca issued the first instance sentence: condemning, among the accused, Michele Mario Elia to 7 years and 6 months in prison (in 2009 CEO of the Italian Railway Network), to 7 years in prison Mauro Moretti (in 2009 CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato) and at 7 years and 6 months Vincenzo Soprano, former CEO of Trenitalia and FS Logistica. All 33 defendants are accused, for various reasons, of railway disaster, culpable fire, multiple manslaughter, personal injury.
Cotone, Viareggio
Workers at work in a greenhouse where chrysanthemums are grown. In Viareggio countryside, horticulture is one of the most developed and profitable primary activities. This is not about super-intensive crops, but the use of pesticides and chemicals is still rather sustained. From many studies, this area has a cancer mortality rate much higher than the national average. It is believed that pesticides may be among the main factors behind this anomaly.
Vecchiano
A signal repeater for mobile network "disguised" as a cypress in the middle of the pines and oaks in the Regional Park of Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli, at the bottom of an area dedicated to reforestation operations. The park's pine forest extends from Viareggio to Livorno, representing one of the few coastal areas not built in Italy. The pine forest is also known for prostitution and drug dealing.
Pisa
The Leaning Tower attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every day. Most of these tourists, however, simply get off the bus outside the entrance door to Piazza dei Miracoli, stay under the tower the time needed to take some photos in the typical pose with the arm raised, buy some souvenirs, then reassemble on the bus. Apparently the "miracle" under the tower is that of globalization, mass tourism and the massification and simplification of the photographic gesture.
Tombolo, Camp Darby, Pisa
US military base of Camp Darby, established in 1951 with a surface of a thousand hectares in the Tuscan pineforest between Pisa and Livorno, is considered the most important logistical detachment of US Army in Europe: logistics base for most US military operations in the Middle East thanks to its strategic location and connections.
Camp Darby is supposed to be the largest American arsenal in Europe, the only base camp outside national borders where vehicles and ammunition are kept together. The civilian population and Italian government are not aware of the activities and the quantity and quality of materials and armaments stored and sorted here.
